Welcome to the 'Abandoned Tea Party'...

Abandoned Tea Party -mice and insects
In between the bees, bunnies and felted fox heads, I've been working on my 'Abandoned Tea Party' collection. The concept is that a tea party has been laid out which has, for various reasons, been abandoned (there's a back story to this which I'm still writing & which will be used to illustrate a bigger feature during my North Wales Helfa Gelf display in September) and little creatures and insects have moved in on the food.

Mouse Tucking into Cake
I've started with cakes and fruit first as I had some left over from a recent making spree and I find them the most pleasurable foods to crochet. I like to add in some needle felted details ie the strawberry & leaves, and find the mice and insects easier & more satisfying to needle felt than crochet as I have more control over the result! I'll be adding these to my Etsy shop and plan on encasing a few in bespoke box frames to give a different effect.

Joyfully Geeky Crochet- Creating a TARDIS

Creating a TARDIS (correctly using capitals now after previous admonishments by my pedantic husband) has, I can confidently declare, been my second favourite present make ever (only bested by a crocheted honeycomb frame made for my bee-keeping mother). It may indeed have a wibbly-wobbly roof (angle of the above picture is flattering!), cheerfully wandering letters on the 'police box' signs and a tendency towards a leaning base, but I am sadly very proud of my little blue box. Part of the pleasure definitely comes from anticipating the look on my brilliant Dr Who-loving friend's face as he opens the box it's travelled north in. Concerned about any misunderstanding, I've taped an 'it's not shoes!' note to the top so as to avoid even momentarily confusion when presented with a peppermint green Clarkes box. Once he fights his way through the swathes of bubble wrap (it was a big box), he'll be the wondrous owner of this mini delight. I'm thrille...

(Anatomical) Love Is In the Air!

Crochet Anatomical Hearts by Lost In The Wood February has been set aside for a much needed catch up with the paperwork (dull but essential), a move into my new cute little studio (exciting), finishing commissions (overdue) and an exhibition piece (satisfying). However, I was a very busy little bee in January, working on some new anatomical designs (which will be a key focus for my work this year). I've started with hearts, the most appropriate bodily organ for this time of year and one of the most interesting to crochet with all it's ventricles, veins and arteries. I'm not claiming these are anatomically correct (no student of biology/ physiology should look to these as learning aids or we're all done for) but they make a reasonable attempt. Intended as large wall pieces, hang them as statement art works or nestle a smaller one under a bell jar and let them be brazen about their well crafted weirdness! They have been hanging splendidly in the Lotti & W...

An Unusual Valentine's Day Kit!

Get set for Valentine's Day with this crocheted kit to cover all eventualities: love potions to help you win over your object of attraction, fruity condoms for protection and penicillin for recovery if that protection didn't quite work out!  Disclaimer : other lifestyles/ romantic preferences are available, spells don't work + wool makes an awful prophylactic! I love creating potion bottles. There's real glass inside each one so they maintain a rigid, precise structure, so hopefully they appear a touch more sinister, rather than squashy and amusing.  Previously, my failure to let go of any interestingly shaped bottles has led to a mildly out of  hand glass hoarding situation developing in my already over stuffed little house. Thankfully the Great Glass Clear Out intervened to save me, and a lot of shelf space, from this collecting compulsion. These days it's special bottles only that are saved from the recycling to await transformation into curious potions, poisons ...
